More media attention to the ‘balance’ story
The Wall Street Journal just published a health column on the immune balance story. As the piece states (bold is mine): “A growing number of biologists believe that, in addition to its protective role, the immune system acts as a master regulator of our microbial menagerie, working “to maintain communities of bacteria in balance,” said Margaret McFall-Ngai, a University of Wisconsin biology and immunology professor…
…this hypothesis could have wide-ranging consequences for medicine because a growing number of health problems, from inflammatory-bowel disease to obesity, have been linked to bacterial communities out of balance, as opposed to a lone pathogen.
Take at look at the complete story here (may require registration).
Update: The link above appears not to link to the entire story. A way to get it is to Google “immune balance allergy” then go to Google News, where a story link should appear entitled, “Immune System’s Double Duty.” Click that link to go to the the fully displayed story.
