Over-hygiened and out of balance

early exposure may be a good thing

early exposure may be a good thing

For me, this is the article that really opened my eyes to the concept of immune balance. A March 4, 2008 story in the Washington Post. It discusses how American society has evolved from an agrarian, rural existence to the urban and suburban settings. In the process, babies are not exposed the the low level bacteria and microbes from plants, animals and dirt as they were in the early part of the 20th century, when many if not most were born on or near farms. Hence, immune systems were not given a chance to “tune” themselves, so important during the infant years. The result: a society now in which 50 percent of people suffer from some sort of allergy and others from any number of chronic conditions.

Don’t stop here. Read the story. It’s dead on in painting a compelling picture.
